If you only have time for one class - this is the one. This course will cover the basics of permaculture principles, how to build food forests, and how to create a healthy and sustainable, low-maintenance backyard ecosystem. Elements of each of the modules below will be discussed, giving the learner a good overview, hopefully inspiring you to come back and take more in-depth learning through our residential programs.
This module starts with a tasting of home-made liqueurs and cordials made with flowers. Then you will walk through the demonstration garden and learn about all the amazing flowers you never knew were edible. As you graze your way through the garden, you will collect flowers which you will use to make flower spring rolls and flower foccacia. Then sit down with a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful lunch you made.
This module will teach you everything you need to know about raising happy and healthy urban chickens and how to use their manure to bring health and life to your soil - the most important building block of a healthy ecosystem. Learn how to set up an easy compost system that lets the chickens do all the work, and how to make your own fertilizers. Please bring garden gloves to this class and be prepared to interact with my "girls."
This is an offsite module where you will be foraging in the forest for edible and medicinal mushrooms. Learn about the easiest mushrooms to identify, how to stay safe, and even how to build your own mushroom garden. This module only runs in the spring and fall and requires you have the physical capacity to climb uphill on uneven terrain. Appropriate footwear and outerwear is a must.
This module starts with a walk through the demonstration garden where you will learn about the incredible healing properties of dozens of plants that are easily grown in an urban setting - many you probably have been growing (or weeding out) for years without even knowing the medicinal properties of them. Then you will sit down and tailor make your own medicinal teas, tinctures, liqueurs, and balms.
This module discusses what is in soil and why healthy soil is so important to the survival of the planet. Learn how to compost, revive dead soil, and how to build your own soil from scratch. You will learn various methods for building gardens, how to test and amend soil organically, and how to make your own perfect potting mix. Please bring garden gloves to the class.
This module will teach you all about the growing organic and biodynamic wine industry in the South Okanagan and where to go to find the best organic wines. Learn where your favorite varieties are and how to properly "taste" while sampling some great wines.
