Permaculture was founded by David Holmgren and Bill Mollison who wanted to establish a more natural approach to agriculture that would encourage people to work with nature and the natural rhythms that surround us. And so the design system known as permaculture was born. Permaculture seeks to observe a space and how it naturally interacts with the elements before designing the garden. The design then attempts to mimic nature through the development of healthy soil built over time by layers of organic matter. Biodiversity in the permaculture food forest forces plants to compete and builds beneficial relationships between diverse plants which, along with healthy soil, eliminates the need for fertilizers and pesticides. The permaculture garden also reduces water use through the use of swales and by keeping soil covered - like a forest floor - with layers of organic matter.
Believe it or not, edible landscapes can be both beautiful and low maintenance. At Global Village Permaculture you can learn how to transform your yard into food in a way the neighbours will approve of! Afterall, if you are going to water it - wouldn't it be nice to eat it rather than have to mow it? If learning to do it yourself is not your thing, don't worry, Global Village can design a landscape just for you, to meet your specific needs. Call today for a free consultation.
With the creation of tree guilds, the perrmaculture garden uses various plants, planted in close proximity around trees - usually fruit and nut trees. Each plant plays a unique role in the "food forest." Some plants attract beneficial pollinators, while others transfer nutrients or repell pests. Like in a natural forest, each plant and the mycellium network beneath it, work together in a balanced way creating soil health.
