Mushroom foraging has become a farvorite thing for me to do in the spring and Fall before and after my BnB business opens and closes.
I no longer do week long tours in the PNW due to political tensions in the U.S. but I do plan on doing some tours on Vancouver Island in the Fall of 2027 and 2028 - so stayed tuned.
Foraging is an incredibly beautiful and grounding experience - the mushrooms are a bonus! The forests are full of edible and medicinal mushrooms - just waiting to be found. It is like a treasure hunt for grown ups!
On my mushroom foraging tours you will see stunning scenery and a great many species of mushrooms - many of which are gourmet edibles.
Tours are 2.5 to 3 hour foraging hikes ranging from easy to moderate. There will be some driving (up to 45 mins each way) to various foraging locations.
On these hikes you will learn where to look for specific fungi and how to safely identify edible and medicinal species. After your hike you are free to enjoy everything the area has to offer.
All hikers must have appropriate waterproof boots and outer clothing as it can get wet and muddy at times and every person must sign idemnification forms.
Call or email to book your date - but keep in mind, mushrooms are seasonal, and availablility will always depend on rain. Below is a general idea of when you can expect are good times:
Spring morels in the Okanagan generally start popping about the same time as the dandelions - close to when the lilacs bloom.
Fall mushroom season sees a lot of different varieties - mostly in the mountains on either side of the Okanagan valley. Boletes, Milk caps, oysters, etc are definately rain dependant...I tend to go hunting 3 to 5 days after a good soaking. So keep an eye on the weather.
Also bear in mind that temperatures in the mountains are as much as 7 to 10 degrees cooler than in the valley.
